9A block from Audi 88
Looks very similar

Ok, I'm having to back track here. I said that the engine code WAS 9A but the car I was pulling parts off of looked like it had been tuned and abused then left for dead so there's a possibility it was swapped in. I don't actually have any technical reference, I'm just going from experience on this and when I had my 4000 at the club meets I was also told that it was the "same" motor as the 2.0 GTI. I'm still looking up engine codes now but I don't remember much about the B3 or above because I had a B2 and it was complicated enough. To paraphrase, I might have been wrong, it's happened before.

But this is not the same 9A as the VW block, right? And let's not forget
there's a tranny with that code too. What were they thinking?
