non scirocco (tax) question

ex-IRS agent? Holy-crap, I knew there was something funny about this guy.

You are not allowed to deduct 37.5 cents per mile for the distance you commute to work. I was able to deduct my daily drive because I am technically an independent contractor, not an employee. My place of work is my home, so I commute in my underwear, then drive from my office to where I do most of my contract work. Unfortunately I haven't kept good track of my mileage, so I had to grossly underestimate the total driving distance to be on the safe side. I'm probably going to accept an offer to become an employee for my main contractor soon. The advantage of that is, among other non-tax things, that instead of me having to pay 15.3% to social security and medicare out of my pocket, I will only have the usual 7.65% withheld from my checks and the company will pay the rest. Effectively I'll have a 7.65% raise, even though I'm working on the same commissioned rate I've been working at.

I was also able to deduct my flight school expenditures because the training does not qualify me for a new job, but does enhance my ability to do my current job. My company has a plane, flies its engineers a lot, and does some aviation accident investigation. At least the AOPA assures me that I can do that.

Lastly, thanks to my son for keeping me from paying any taxes this year, ... or rather thanks to him and his expensive day care, my realitive lack of employment, my wife's former employer, the accademy...

Mac, you can still get credit for your childcare expenses, even if you earn a ton, just not the additional child tax credit.

Don't know why I felt compelled to ramble on taxes tonight.

If state and federal taxes are taken out of your check while employed in VA then you don't have to pay MD state tax, but any other taxes like property tax, then yes.

But Kevin is right, each state has their own little way of doing things, so check with the state.

Tonee, ex-IRS agent

Mike Smith <smithma7@gmail.com> wrote:
On my last job I worked in VA and lived in MD.
