As a former 2G DSM owner (1998 GSX) and a longtime lurker at www.dsm.org I
haven't heard of any (well maybe one, but not a lot) turbos blowing up other
than in cases of extreme neglect.

Mostly on those cars it was exploding transmissions and bent valves after
the timing belt stripped teeth or broke. Otherwise they work pretty damned
good.
