Splash guards

I think thats what they're called.  You know those things that are inside
the front wheel well....But my question is, is there any reason i
shouldn't remove one. I ask because the one on my driver side has been
bent and come loose and on hard braking or turning rubs against my tire
and i don't want it to one day puncture my tire.  TIA.
