axle stuck to transmission

I feel your pain.  Just cut the head off that stripped axle bolt and I am
stuck in the same spot.  Wouldn't you know it though as soon as the head
came off the rest of the bolt came out by hand.  GRRRR.  The Bentley manual
says to "loosen the clamping bolt which holds the control arm ball joint to
the wheel bearing housing, and remove ball joint from the housing."

Is this not right?  Is it not prefered?  I don't remember doing this before
for some reason.
