Have you tried a shot of ether? That can eliminate an electrical issue and
point to just fuel or vice versa.

My neighbor has an 85 Golf that he's been trying to get started.  It turns
over, sounds like it's trying to fire every now and then, but will not
start.

We've verified fuel pumps are working and fuel is hitting the distributor.
I thinks it's electrical between hall unit to coil.  Anybody have a good
place to look or some tests to run at different locations to try to isolate
the problem?  Anyone know of a common problem in this area?  

On the fuel system side the DPR wouldn't cause this would it?
