Well maybe I'll give the bastard half a point for trying...

After swapping Sean's knock box in w/ no results the next item on the
list to try was the damn CIS fuel distributor.  After a nice spray of
fuel to the face (why don't I  *EVER* learn to expect a SECOND (and
usually larger) spray of fuel when relieving the pressure!!!), I
swapped in another fuel distributor and that ended up fixing the
problem...  Serves me right for cursing CIS eh Cathy?  :)  Bosch built
in anti-slander self-destruct capabilities I guess - crafty Germans...

So much for my guess that bad spark was to blame...  Oh well, I'm just
happy the damn thing is running good again - actually even better than
before the problem, my idle is perfect now!
