The glow...

    Before you go swaping the whole alternator try finding that voltage regulator or I think that's what it's called.  The little plastic cap held on with two screws on the back of the alternator.  I went through three entire alternators in my GTX and one already on my GLI.  Luckily I have parts available but when I first started looking for alternators they were 300 remanned and 450 new so I went to the pick and pulls and got them for $50 used.  A better idea would have been to find a source for just that regulator for under $50 and save myself the hassle.  As far as I know the alternators themselves don't often go bad.  In hindsight three of those were only regulators and one was a bad bearing which was really different to have happen.

  I just tightened the belt so that's out the alt spins quietly so it's probably not a bad bearing.  Is there a test for the voltage regulator?  The brushes look good as far as length.
