Rear Strut Tower Replacement?

Alright guy I need some information, help and or thoughts.  I need to fix 
the rust on the rear strut tower of the 86 Scirocco I picked up.
I did a search for information and only come up with front strut tower 
replacement.

I know the rust that is on the strut tower is fixable or supportable but is 
completely removing it an option?

Has anyone ever had to do this on there Scirocco?  Does the inner rear panel 
spot weld like the Rabbit's?
