Steering lock ?

For a flat tow, where all 4 wheels remain on the pavement, it would
seem to be a better idea to keep the front wheels connected so
the two tires would be pointed in the same direction all the time.
I suspect it would also help going around corners, instead of having
each of them be able to twist free by disconnecting the tie
rods. That would make it more difficult to turn without
scrubbing at least one tire because it wasn't turning in sync
with the other side.

Removing the steering lock / ignition switch from a 20ish
year old VW is really rather simple. Remove plastic covers,
two phillips screws. Remove allen headed bolt from left
hand side, below. Pull electical plugs from back of
switch area. Pry open metal "wrap" enough to slide
it off the steering column towards the passenger side.
Steering is now at your command, you make take her
out Mr. Sulu. :)

This was off the top of my head from years ago, so I hope I
didn't miss a bit, but most of it is correct I believe.

  Hey guys,

I need to tow my car in the morning and I cannot find the key to release the
steering? Being that the engine bay is bare I was thinking about just
pulling the linkage between the rack and the column. But is there and easier
way? I know I could pull the wheel and the lock cylinder off but that would
take quite a bit of time and I have a 3 hr trip to go tomorrow after I get
  my towing done. Any ideas??
