Not sure if it would be gearing, as that would be speed related. Could it just
be a type of sound that makes it difficult to tell that its actually speed
related?

Thermite would probably be the quickest way to fix it, as the whole mailing list
would show up at your place, and once I managed to talk them into dropping their
torches, you're problems would be fixed in short order.

It happens, plenty of possible causes, worry about the more obvious stuff first
