I'm so pumped! It runs...But why is the distributor THERE?(sorta long)

Jim,
you're making this more complicated than it needs to be.
Just pull the distributor and turn the tang on the end of the oil pump
shaft clockwise an hour or two. Index the distributor shaft roughly
the same amount and reinstall. You may have to fiddle a little bit
with the respective angles to get the distributor to engage the tang,
but way easier than mucking around with the timing belt and covers and
such.
