What was that Scirocco subject again?



No, you cannot swap an A1 axle into an A2 chassis. It might actually bolt in 
(doubt it) but the design is quite different and would surely give you some 
interesting handling!! However, you can just swap the brakes and stub axles. 
ETKA lists the parts as being the same.

As far as putting a 16V head on an 8V, the 16V pistons have guite a 
pronounced valve clearance notch for the intake valves. The 8V piston does 
not have this. Whether the valves will hit or not is unclear (seems unlikely 
to me since the valves are pretty well closed by the time the piston hits 
TDC). Perhaps VW was trying to make the 16V a non-interference engine. 
Anyway, only one way to find out for sure ;^)
Personally, I'd think any advantage of the 16V head would be negated by the 
very low compression.
Sticking with the 8V the obvious things are cam, exhaust, swapping in a used 
2.0L.
