Check the fuel pump relay - my '86 had a jumper wire in it
that would do the same thing.

I don't see why you'd want to bother - probably cost you a
bit of money.
Do you have a Bentley manual yet? If not, get one. (Check
eBay). It has very complete electrical diagrams for these
cars, along with just about everything else on how to fix
these cars.

If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and get knee-deep
into the Bentley, it's possible. (The Mk 1 cars seemed to
have a lot of electrical issues.) It will be time
consuming but worth the effort IMHO. Just keep venting
your frustrations here, and I'm sure someone will either
help or at least commiserate with you. :p
