Hi,
Thanks to everyone who provided suggestions for finding an alternator. I
recieved a 79' rocco for free down here in south texas. It came with a nice
body and lots of extras but the electrical is awful. I replaced all the
parts that were missing and it started up right away-but only ran for about
five minutes or less. Lots of electrical components are not working, and
the person who gave it to me put all american fuses in the first 4 fuse
slots (I think because he ran H-4's). When I turn the key (not all the way)
the fuel pump becomes activated and does not stop pumping until I turn the
key back to off. It came with an alarm that has not been in use for quite a
while (it goes off when I put one of the wires going to the siren to the
body). I think that I should have the alarm removed before I start doing
more diagnostics (maybe there is a kill switch?). I don't want to start
messing with wires because I basically don't want to mess things up more
than they are already. I thought I would tow the car to a stereo shop and
have them uninstall the alarm. I also checked and the coil has spark but
there is no spark coming from the spark plugs. Is it possible that this old
1980's alarm is keeping the car from running? And does it seem like a good
plan to have a stereo shop remove the alarm? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated because I just moved to S. Texas from Seattle, Wa and I
don't know any vw gurus here.
Thanks,
Greg
P.S Can a rocco with a solid body but nasty eletrical problems be salvaged
and made relatively reliable?
