all 8v oil filters the same?

I ran into this a while back with my sister's '97 GTI.  I had been putting 
in Napa Silver or Mann(whichever I had around at the time), but later 
noticed it calls for a different filter.  The car seems fine after years of 
doing this so, I personally, am not that concerned of filter difference.
