Acid Dipping Engines
Larry, two questions, first does the alkaline solution affect the
intermediate shaft bearing or will it still have to be replaced when you
'tank' the block? Second, is the alkaline tank also used on the
aluminum heads too? I have had success cleaning heads with Purple
Power, which is probably a weak alkaline.
Thanks, Rick.

Most machine shops that hot tank engines and heads these days use a
"friendlier" strong alkaline solution. Doing research on chemically
stripping car bodies led me to believe that most facilities that
"tank" cars also use a strong alkaline solution vs. acid as well...
Mark.
Mark is correct. A strong alkaline will remove everything but the
metal.
You do NOT want to indiscriminatly remove metal from a block, which acid
would do....bearing surfaces and even cylinder bores must be virginal.
Let's be careful out there.
