Collapsing US bumpers: safe?

Now here's a question too:
I've had them off for a while now and have had to move them around a
couple times - they are HEAVY!
Anything I can do to shave a few pounds?  I could swear I've seen a
post here or on vortex about it...  time to go digging I guess...
