Re: Re: Stake your axle nuts!

All this talk has got me a little nervous - last week I disassembled
my brake drums in the rear and cleaned everthing and repacked the
wheel bearings and such. When I put the bearings back on, I'm pretty
sure I followed the bentley exactly which said basically to put the
bearing in, then the thrust washer, then put the nut on and tighten it
just enough that you can still move the thrust washer sideways. I was
suprised that you weren't supposed to tighten it down any harder, but
followed the directions because, "what do I know." There was a cotter
pin that went on after that, but there wasn't anything more with this
staking stuff that I should have done, was there? Thanks.

I agree, modifiying a fastener is foolhardy. You could not know how much is too much. If you absolutely insist to do this, do it with 'new' OE nuts...

I thought we were initially talking about stub axle nuts (rear), not the fronts... I must say I have never had any trouble with the fronts either, and I believe I know why. Don told me years ago that when you do the front nuts up, do it with the impact, and do it until it does not move any more. IIRC, his impact goes up to nearly 300 ft/lb. It would take a lot of work and/or a long breaker bar to duplicate that pressure!

Sorry for the confusion on my part...
