1. Yes I know I can turn html off in Thunderbird, the same way I can turn it
off in outlook why I only made a slight comment about it.
2. you are probably using McAfee Antivirus, especially version 8 is bad for
that. I have removed it from my pc because it drove me up a wall, I have
complained 5 times, I had a running ticket on the subject for 2 months, they
are all answering me they do not understand what I mean (even with numerous
screen captures), in the end I refuted the charge on my CC because they
refused to refund me (download software and not a retail purchase) and told
them I was going back Norton.
Norton does notify you, but it can be turned off (grin).
Thunderbird is a nice software but if the antivirus software does not scan
each email then it become a "will this email that is coming in run a script
and install a virus on my hard drive?"
It's a risky proposition and probably one of the reason why people are still
tossing worm emails all over the place, because they use alternate
anti-viral and email software that does not protect at the door against the
infestations.
A mailing list is hard to control, and I do believe your system (linux or
not) has a antiviral software that screens each email that is sent to the
list to minimize this risk. But we should not rely on your pc to clean
everything (and it does not because there is no perfect system)

It's a drag, but I don't know any email client these days the doesn't
DEFAULT to html, but as Unka-Kev says you can turn it off;

I'm curious if my experience is the same as yours, could you explain
more as to what the bad behavior is?
Mine was the AV would want to stop and have me attend to each and
every attached spam viri as it came in.
(Yeah folks- this seems Off Topic because it aint Sciroccos but it's
directly related to getting list email so bear with if you would.)
