Problem with surging/hunting while driving

I had a similar problem on my 84 GTI (same FI).  I played with it and played 
with it, but it had this surging...  It was horrible at idle, and almost 
imperceptible at 4K while cruising...  I checked the fuel pressure, spot 
on...  I replaced the ground strap and saw some improvement, but still 
there...  I replaced the fuel distributor,  better, but still there...  I 
replaced the computer with another...  BING!  That fixed it, and I have had no 
more troubles...  

You might look at the things I mentioned above in any order, and see if any of 
it helps/applies to you...
