engine shield & streamlining

   anyone ever constructed an under engine shield for their scirocco? i 
figure it'd help the early crowd with the alternators on the bottom but 
i've never seen one out there.
   also, what about making the bottom of the car smooth? covering this 
and that to make even less resistance under there. would it work or 
would our cars end up like the ?mercedes? le mans cars a few years ago 
and want to lift off? again, just posing ideas.
