He was doing something wrong...

Make sure you don't let those clowns bench test your starter.

The VW A1/A2 starters don't have a support for the spindle, like other cars.
The 020 starters need the support in the trans, or it will destroy the
windings.

Before I threw out a bad Passat auto trans, I cut out the spindle support,
so I can safely bench test starters.
