Actually, the letters/numbers on the block is the engine code. VW used
different combinations of heads and blocks to make different compression/hp
motors so a JH engine code is with the head and block. If the head has been
replaced with a hydraulic head it's no longer a JH, technically. So on a 78
you could have many different combinations but if it's a 1.6 then probably
not since they didn't have hydraulic lifters back then. HTH!!
