LONG and pretty far-fetched: fabbing and modifying roccos forQuattro (Haldex or torsen)
Ahhh, there's the dream.... AWD rocco with a VR6 (and fun upgrades...). Then I'd beat the hell out of the body and put a hole in the muffler. NOT! Although I love the "sleeper" concept, I'd rather have a Reiger GTO on the body.

hey, you guys have more technical expertise than most
other non-professional mechanics i've ever met, so i
figured i'd ask:
Of course this all sounds crazy, and I won't even get
to start till summertime...
But the garage-owner I used to work for, me, and a
couple friends are trying to get a rally thing going.
I got to do some rallycross this summer in my
mostly-stock 85 8v, TONS of fun.
But i am thinking a really nuts all-out Open class car
would be far more entertaining.
Anyone here have any thoughts or suggestions at all
about any of the following?
-Mid-engined RWD roc (using probably audi 4k rear
suspension and the whole engine/trans unit from some
other FWD VW, like, say, a VR6 and its corresponding
cable-shift trans)
-AWD rocco using, say:
-vanagon syncro trans/driveline + some newer engine
(yeah, i know this equates to a fat lump of cast iron
sticking out the ass end, but with power going to the
front also, it might (?) be manageable... Maybe using
a haldex diff for the front? With what little I know
of them it's PROBABLY possible without too much actual
modification to the diff proper...
OR
Maybe use a whole, traditional Quattro driveline, ala
the dahlback Golf RSI? I figure prepping a rally car
will take a lot of shell prep like seam-welding and
stiffening anyway, so it might not be too
unreasonable... Suppose, for example, you use a newer
setup, like a V6 from an A4 or 90 model, and like i
said, pull a 'dahlback' and mount the radiator and all
the other crap in the back end (almost as if you were
building a mid-engined car backwards). This would
almost certainly require a scratchbuilt front
crossmember and grill support etc, but the radiator
being in back might prove to be very helpful in this
case...
And again, before anyone calls me crazy (again), I
should mention the team in the northeast that runs
(what used to be) a VW Fox wagon with full Quattro
driveline and a biturbo V6 from an S4... I know this
one doesn't require the change from longitudinal to
transverse, making it WAY easier... Maybe a two-door
fox sedan would be easier for this?
The main goal with doing something like this instead
of just resorting to a DSM or old 4k Quattro like more
people do, is to have A. A relatively light car for
once and B. a short wheelbase without using the audi
sport method of hacking 2 feet of body off behind the
b-pillars... but maybe that would be less crazy than
this stuff?
Like i said folks, we're brainstorming. Let's hear
what you all think...
