Front Tires Rubbing

List,
On my 86 16V, I just installed new Bilstein shocks ad H&R lowering springs which obviously lowered the car about an inch & a half, right. Tires are 195/65/14 on 14x7 ARE rims.
Only problem is the front tires rub badlywhen turning and on moderate bumps.
According to the tire chart provided by Scirocco.Org, I only have 1 1/4 inch wheelwel clearance with this setup as opposed to the stock 185/65/14 setup which provides 2 1/2 inch wheelwell clearance.
I guess I could go buy new tires, i.e. 185/60/14, but that's seems a little expensive for now.
With this new shock/spring setup, is changing back to stock springs or changing tires my only recourse?
If I have to change tires, is there an optimal tire size?
Spacers appear to defeat the purpose of lowering the car to begin (TOL).
Any all worthy suggestions welcome.
Thanks!
Rob
