interesting coolant stuff

I read something interesting a few years back.. Evidently Dex-Cool, that =
orange stuff, works a bit differently for corrosion protection. I don't =
know exactly how but the claim was that the green stuff had something in =
it that was actually abrasive and that the orange stuff didn't. One of =
the benefits of the orange stuff was supposed to be the fact that =
waterpumps lasted a hell (5X?) of a lot longer because the additives =
weren't in there to chew them up. =20
As much fun as it is to remove the alternator, AC compressor and all =
their brackets to change your waterpump housing when all of the tiny =
steel bolts break of in the $20 aluminum housing is I decided to give it =
a try.
I had it in my racecar for 5 years and never had a problem. Of course I =
only drove it something like 3000 miles in that time.
Alan
Not bitter about VW waterpumps designs at all.

just did some research, check this out:
http://www.redlineoil.com/redlineoil/wwti.htm
turns out the heat capacity of water goes WAY down when adding 50/50 =
glycol, basically we need to run the minimum percentage of glycol as =
possible to prevent freezing and help inhibit scaling/corrosion in the =
aluminum parts of the engine. glycol also helps lubricate the water pump =
seal. after reading that page, im droping the mix to about 20%, and will =
throw some water wetter in there shortly.
...now to find some water wetter...

I had almost this exact same thing happen to me, I haven't tried =
thinning out the mix yet though-=20

ok, so i fixed a hose on the rieger today, and decided to do some =
flush
action. flushed system, and actually threw some antifreeze in =
there this
time (i usually run just water). i went with about 60% antifreeze =
mix. now
check this out:
temps prior:
water - centered over led, max of 3/4 when fan turns on.
oil - normally 90-100 when moving, peaking at 110 during extended =
idle in
traffic, but will settle back to 100 if a/c is turned on low (due =
to
radiator fan running in slow).
temps after:
water - towards upper part of led.
oil - minimum 100 when moving (more like 105), gets to 110 pretty =
fast,
stays at 110 even with a/c on low.
i realize antifreeze doesnt cool as well as water, but is it THAT =
much
worse?
also, could it be that all is good, but the antifreeze is raising =
the
boiling point, so where the system was incapable of going much =
ove! r 100c
before, now it can more easily?
all other parts of cooling system are still working perfect, fan =
operates on
its own. nothing was done to tstat, etc.
whatcha think? should i thin out the mix? what is the absolute =
minimum i
should run to ensure the proper protection that antifreeze is =
supposed to
provide? (as far as lubrication, etc).
Al
