ICM/coil donor question

Okay, I will shortly get figuring out what why my car won't start, and
possible candidates (on top of the usual wiring type issues) could include
perhaps a coil and /or ignition control module. I don't know yet if I need
either, but in case I do, what are suitable donor vehicles? I have to plan
ahead since the only decent yard is an hour's drive.

ICM: There were a few 8V Sciroccos at the yard, and I was told the ICM from
them is suitable, does that go for any gas engine of the vintage in case the
Roccs are gone? 

Coil: Will a 16V one from a GTI or Passat (both presumably Motronic) work? Or
is it specific for our cars? 

And last, is it really best to buy either of these items new, or is used going
to do the job?
