Replacement speakers???
Sounds like you've got it all under control. The 4" plate with the seperate
tweeter is the best option, but isn't always necessary. The DKDs are a
really nice set and they aren't too expensive. The Alpine Type S is a good
sounding speaker too. For bass an 8" kicker will give you a good amount as
long as it's in a properly designed ported enclosure with some decent power
going to it. Placement of the box plays a big part in output especially in
our hatchbacks. Usually the best position is to have it along one of the
sides, with the port and woofer facing the back of the car - experiment with
distance from the back.
You could always bridge the 2 rear channels of your alpine amp to power a
subwoofer, and power your rear speakers off the deck. Then all you need is
an efficient 10" sub in a sealed box, which can be had very cheap. That
would be the cheapest way to get bass right away. After that you can always
buy a class d amp for your sub and regain the 2 channels on the amp.
Good luck!
Vince

Subject: Replacement speakers???
Hey all,
I'm trying to decide how to upgrade the speakers in my '85 Scirocco. I
have the stock setup now. I have a Pioneer head unit and an Alpine
4-channel amp (30W RMS x 4). I really don't want to do any serious
effort to swap the speakers. I'm looking at the JBL P6452 and the MB
Quart DKD146 speaker sets for front and rear. I've had great luck with
MB Quart in the past and they're cheaper so I'm leaning that way, but
the JBL's look nice as well. I'm really interested in good, clean,
crisp, articulate speakers. I realize I'm not gonna get much (any)
bass - but I don't listen to thumpin' music much anyway. BTW - If the
bass response is too bad, I'm thinking of adding a Kicker 8" sub box in
the hatch. Any opinions?
Thanks for your help!
Matt
