The Vega blocks were cast in high-silicone aluminum. They would =
carefully acid etch the cylinders, which would remove a small amount of =
aluminum, leaving the silicone as the wear surface. You know how well =
that worked....

There are/were several, but mfgrs have figured out how to get the =
silicone? to migrate towards the
wall surfaces during the cooling process, providing a wear-resistant =
surface. =20
And, although I'll have to check, I believe the liners would probably =
be cast iron vs. steel.
