cups v. coilovers?
DUH!!! Don't you think I would of actually DRIVEN them too??? I'm not some
backyard mechanic swapping things around to see if they will work I have
actually driven the cars too and haven't seen any difference. I have 16v
springs on my Rabbit Truck right now just because they were handy and
haven't seen any difference in suspension/handling/whatever at all. I would
think that the few extra pounds in aluminum isn't that big of a deal and as
far as placement of the alternator???? I have no idea what you're talking
about since they are in the exact same place. Pull of the exahust manifold
and stick on a header and you've more than made up for the weight difference
between a 16v and 8v. Besides, VW has no place in this conversation since
we were talking aftermarket, not factory.
Please, everyone, have some type of argument before you try to argue! It
makes it look a lot more intelligent.

The 16V cylinder head is heavier than an 8V head (guess I'll have to
measure tonight) and ALL of the additional weight is on the front of the
head. The intake manifold is heavier and its weight is all forward of
the head instead of all behind the head. Alternator weight is moved
forward compared to the 8V.
The point is the 16V IS heavier and all the additional weight is all
further forward. That's why a 16V front spring will be stiffer than an
8V for a comparable application.
VW made the OE 16V springs stiffer. They didn't need to cause in the
quantities they were having made there is zip difference in cost. They
did it to maintain the handling and ride balance they thought was
optimum.
The fact that you've swapped springs out of the intended application
means only that they will fit. It doesn't mean they will provide the
optimum ride and handling balance.
