No starter?

As it says, new battery, still no start. So I think I'll be troubleshooting 
starter/ ignition switch stuff (as per the Bentley), I'd appreciate tips on 
what I may have forgotten to hook back up/ knocked loose when I had this 
side of the engine bay apart chasing bad ground wires.
Here's the symptoms:

turn the key, gas pump primes as normal, nothing else happens engine wise, 
no attempt to crank, no clicking, etc. Nothing from the starter at all, 
nada. Dash lights and buzzers sound normal for enough juice available to 
start it, and the big wires to the starter / battery are all in good shape.

I haven't had time to mess with it, so any tips are appreciated. 
(starter/ignition switch/lotsa wires etc are all quite new, grrr)

And for the inevitable "What kind of engine?" question? Come on, you know 
it's the 16V.

Other Scirocco content? Klaus and I had a real nice time together today, 
what a treat to drive a Rocc in December on dry roads when the whole East 
Coast is getting hammered!
