Noise from tranny area

This does not sound like a cheap fix.  I'd say internal gearbox =
problem.....

  I've recently noticed that I'm getting some noise from the tranny area
  on my 88' 16v.  Basicly it sounds kinda like a grinding but it only
  happens when taking off in first grear and only if I'm trying to take
  off hard, or stay in 1st over 2200rpm.  It's not constant, it kinda =

  more noise the harder I hit the gas pedel.  Now the thing is, it will
  also do this in 2nd if I get her high enough in the R's.  due to the
  nopise coming in 2nd as well, I ruled out it being a syncro or true
  tranny problem, I'm thinking maybe the tranny mount?

  Kinda guessing at this point.  Anyone have ideas?
