Try cleaning out the interior of the motor (rings & valves) and THEN
go have the fuel to air ratio set. The black smoke sounds like too
much fuel, hence bad mileage.
Try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crank case, heck if your going to
swap it try a qt. of ATF and let it idle a while then sit over night,
idle the next day and swap oil.
Then there is that Seafoam stuff we've been talking about, but yeah
I'd get the A/F ratio set.
