oil leak: oil pan gasket

i just replaced the oil pan gasket to my 88 16v.
lightly sealed both sides of the gasket w/ the grey
stuff. put it on and torqued the bolts to what i
thought was good. but im having a small leak. do i
have to redo the job or can i just torque the bolts to
spec? over-torque? whats the best approach?
