How much restriction can a Cat be?

Rick,
   I had a test pipe instead of a cat for about 6 months.  I think it 
was just louder with no power gain.  I ended up driving easier because 
at full throttle,  I couldn't even hear the radio!  I then put on a tt 
high flow unit.  The power feels the same, the sound is at a much better 
level for me and the sound is deeper.
