what did i do now????

Sounds like you hard loaded the cat up and shut it off. The build up of unburnt fuel was ignited by the new exhuast gas and powie.
Does happen very often, usually when a cat is showing signs of clogging.

probable cause of the backfire? any guesses? would a backfire that big cause
