Cylinder head gasket - removal & replacement

In my Haynes manual, it says that it is possible to
R&R the cylinder head gasket without disconnecting the
exhaust manifold.

Has anyone done this successfully?  Any tips?

I have removed the head bolts, but the head won't
budge.... I really don't want to disco' the manifold
if I can avoid it.
