New to the list, Mk1 questions.

I have a '81 Scirocco, that is hard to start unless the ambient temp. is
warm. I have to keep it running at first, then it will idle OK, but if I rev
it above 2000 RPM and then let off the accelerator it stalls and will not
start for about five minutes, like it is flooding. If I let it warm up it
runs ok, though the revs do seem to drop when I stop but then come right up
to idle. I changed the plugs and wires, the old plugs were covered in a flat
black coating which is unburnt fuel. The cold start valve is not leaking,
the control pressure regulator reads at 18 ohms, the thermo time switch put
out battery voltage for about half a second when cranking the engine then
the voltage dropped out(hot day when tested, but engine was cold), the
voltage to the control pressure regulator heater is at 10.5 volts(Bentley
shop manual says this should be 11.5) any suggestions, hints?? I should also
mention, the previous owner put the weber throttle body with the redline
adaptor on the car, but didn't do any other intake or exhaust work. This is
a Canadian car, it has no oxygen sensor according to the Bentley manual, i
couldn't see one on the exhaust manifold either. The battery light is also
always on at any RPM, I know this means the regulator and/or diodes are bad
in the alernator though the battery always seems to be able to start the
engine, but could low alternator output be causing a problem( not enough
voltage for the coil ) ? Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm running
out of ideas or should I give in and take it to a mechanic ?

Thanks
