Fairly comprehensive list here. I'd only add that the seals for the =
rotating parts should also be replaced. If budget allows, have the =
engine balanced. Not only will it run smoother, but it will also help it =
live longer.

Sounds like you blew the head gasket and hopefully, nothing more. =
First off, don't run the engine any more in it's current condition. =20
Since the engine has over 200k on it and what sounds like a blown head =
gasket, it's a great time to rebuilt as much as you can afford. First, =
have the head checked and make sure it's not warped. If it's not or at =
least within specs your good to go there. If it is warped, see if you =
can get it decked (shaved) and keep it within specs. I don't know the =
specs, but I know that at least 20 people on the list do, one of them =
will speak up I'm sure.
Then, tear down the block, have the cylinders honed and if possible, =
re-use the pistons but get new rings. Make sure the crank is ok and =
replace the crank/rod bearings. If you can afford it, new valves, valve =
keepers, springs and hydrolic lifters can never hurt (well, it can hurt =
your wallet but not the car). Make sure to check the cam and cam =
bearings as well. New head/valve cover gaskets, put it all back =
together and you turn yourself around, thats what it's all about. If =
all goes well, you will have healthy 16v again ready for at least =
another 100k. If I've missed anything, one of you good folks on the =
list please speak up.
William

Subject: Engine problems...
Well my 266000+ KM sciroccos engine finally let go. I was =
accelerating through 80km/h when all of a sudden I noticed my oil temp =
increased from 95 deg C to like 200 in seconds than I saw grey smoke =
come out the back. I immediately turned the engine off and coasted =
awhile. After looking in the engine compartment there was a smell of =
burnt oil and smoke bellowing out from everywhere, and what appeared to =
be a streak of oil coming from the #3 cylinder where the head and block =
meet (cylinder head gasket). I restarted the engine and when trying to =
get moving again it make a weird clanging sound like a diesel. There is =
a lack of power and it leaks oil/rad fluid. In fact my block heater plug =
fell out!!! Since I will be removing the engine and ripping it apart I =
was wondering what I should look for etc. I am thinking a ring may have =
gone but I am not sure if what happened could be cause by a ring letting =
go. What should I rebuild in the engine? New rings/bearings is that all =
I should replace or is there more? Any ideas would be great!!!
