An actual number; Was: how much gas could a pump pump if a pump couldpump gas?
Min fuel pump delivery rate is .47 gal/min. This is from the Bentley for
an 84 Scirocco, but I doubt the 16V is different.
That is 28.5 gal/hr. Note that this is tested by measuring flow out of
the return line, which means it is flow against a minimum pressure of
4.7 bar. Which means it will deliver this flow rate at a boost pressure
of 1.7 bar (assuming you're using a 3 bar FPR, which is the norm).
So, 28.5 gal/hr X 6.4 lb/gal for 92 octane gives 182.6 lb/hr.
At a BSFC of .5 this would be 365 HP.
Your engine could have a BSFC as high as .6 which would equate to 304
HP.
So, yeah, after all the bullshit is said and done you may need a bigger
pump.
I'd check the fuel rail pressure while you run. If it's dropping at 4500
RPM at WOT then you'll need a bigger pump.
