MK3 Scirocco: is it time?

It may seem odd, but VW has made no secret of the fact that it intends
to position its cars against Mercedes and position Audi against BMW.  It
may make sense in Europe, but I'm not so sure the American market is
going to buy a 40-50k Passat.
