Engine Block questions...

The 3A is an Audi (longitudinal) 8V short block. The 9A is a VW (transverse)
16V short block, so as a minimum the pistons are different and there maybe
some differences with the oil pump and pan.
If you have an 8V and want to upgrade this is a good move although it will
require some miscellaneous bits like distrubutor gear and adapter and block
off plate.
check out www.volkswagen.org
If it needs to be rebuilt it ain't worth much since pistons and rings are
over $400 plus bearing and seals and machine work...it all adds up.
$300-400 seems to be the going rate for a 3A short block with some life left
in it.
