Cleaning solutions for the intake

Hey all,
I have a slight problem stemming from a problem that it did have (I assume).
For a little over a year this car sat, I'd take it out and run it for about
10 Min. a month but not much more than that. well, I got back to it
recently, and decided that this would be my new daily driver, so i started
working on it, whith help from my Chev mechanic father in law. well, after
some time we had every adjustment that could be made set way off, and I had
a backfiring issue, but now that I've got that fixed, the inside of my
airbox is all gummed up with something that resembles tar. it can be wiped
off, but I can't get into every little crevice and I don't really want to be
that hard on the Air Folw arm.

Is there an easy to use chemical that could get this off without harming all
of the injection bits in there, and leaving my airbox (essentially) intact?
Right now I'm thinking carb cleaner, or simple green or something like that,
I just don't know what to try first! If anyone has some experience with this
any input would be apprecieated (even more so if I could spell it right!)
