With Hotmail, his IP address at the time of sending will be in the header
info of the email. Look at a couple of his emails and see if he used
multiple computers (home, work, library). Do a lookup on the IP and
address and contact the internet provider with the  IP, date and time.
Hopefully they'll  cooperate without a warrant.
