weber carb.
Standard replacement webers don't give any better performance than stock
carbs, if you are talking about early 80's and up models, but they can be
easier to set-up and give the option of manual choke. You'll never do better
than an equivalent CIS setup though, unless you go for something like twin
45s which drink petrol. Don't have direct experience of that type of setup
but a friend had a mkI golf with a 16v / twin webers and it was v. fast & v.
thirsty. I am currently running an '87 Scirocco GT which is 1.6 stock VW
carbed from the factory. Compared with the 2.0L CIS, it is so slooow and
doesn't get significantly better fuel economy, despite the long ratio box.
My wife's '86 GT has a 1.8 carbed with a GTI box and it is pretty quick, but
still doesn't compare with an equivalent 1.8 CIS, as the 2.0L was
originally.
