Scirocco died and won't restart

Hello, I am new to the list. I have an 87 16v that began to idle very low
today. I looked around in the engine and couldn't see anything wrong but
noticed a strange sound coming from around the injectors. It went away if the
motor was revved. A little bit later it died as I came off the gas but
restarted. Now it will not restart. Any suggestions? I'm thinking clogged
injector or something like that.
