grinding gears

  i'm not sure if this one went out already, but here goes.
  i swapped a 9a for a 4k. changed this, blah, blah, blah. anyway, got
the thing in there and took off. only problem is that it'll grind from
first to second or third to second unless the rpm's come all the way
down. no problems from 4th or 5th to second, or between any of the other
gears. ideas? i'm hoping the trans isn't bad. i adjusted toe clutch for
about 1" of travel before it engages but no luck there. please help.
