[?] crunching in the front

While out at the Rocc's in the Fog cruise the car seems to have sustained 
some battle damage. I have a continuous crunching coming from the front that 
happens about every wheel revolution (a guestimate). It speeds up and slows 
down with speed changes. Wheels are straight, so is the alignment, and the 
noise is always the same strenght. It's fairly noticeable at a slow roll.

TBerk mentioned that I'm probably looking at ball joints on their way to 
parts heaven. What's the fastest way to check what's wrong without tearing 
apart the entire front end? This needs fixing soon from the sound of it and 
I'll need to find time to order parts and still have the sun shining on a 
weekend to fix it.
