If you really want to go turbo...

IMO 1.8T is too much money and work.  Consider the following...

-you have to use an 02A tranny unless you like changing 020s (ask kelly). 
this means a cable shifter swap.
-swap the pedal cluster (hard)
-have to use a different turbo/downpipe to get it to fit in the A1 chassis
-swap entire engine management system, or get aftermarket.

this is just things ive heard, i know theres a lot more stuff.  ive heard 
that an early turbo diesel setup will bolt up.  but if I were looking to get 
started on a turbo 8v, I would buy/make a manifold and bolt up a small t3.  
get a downpipe fabbed up, and dont even bother to intercool it unless you 
have the cash.  you'll probably get 40-50hp with safe boost on high octane 
fuel.  from here you can choose to lower the compression, intercool it, and 
build around it.  when the hp gets higher you'll have to consider more fuel 
and retarding timing.
